Av Vattev SS24 was a shout-out to Mick Jagger’s androgynous style

For those who think today’s male celebrities are doing anything new by donning a skirt or layering up on jewellery, then please refer to the Rolling Stones’ iconic 1969 The Stones in the Park gig in Hyde Park where their front man, Mick Jagger, performed the entire set whilst wearing a tasteful white ruffled dress. It was one of those moments that ensured Jagger’s legacy as not just a style icon, but a style iconoclast, so playfully rejecting the idea of male and female clothing decades before such ideas actually hit the mainstream.

The iconic dress was also one of the main looks that inspired Antonio Vattev to position Jagger as the central figure around his SS24 Av Vattev collection, Sweet Summer Sweat. Large pointed collars and bold checks were central, elegantly using Jagger’s style of the late 60s and early 70s as the starting point from which Vattev sliced new iterations that swung across the body, shifting the silhouette as models walked. The designer’s trademark jukebox closure, that sleek single button fastening, was seen across the collection on both jackets and trousers while, elsewhere, long drawstring’d shirts harked back to both the 60s and the Medieval era. Something we don’t have nearly enough of in contemporary fashion.
