Symphony
Titled Symphony, Ahluwalia’s FW23 collection drew from the designer’s sonic timeline: Bollywood soundtracks and hip-hop from her childhood; bashment and house music from her teens; afrobeat and neo-wave r&b she’s currently tuned into. Proustian moments, these soundscapes transport to formative times in Priya’s life; weaving a tapestry that is distinctly her own.
Blurring lines between design and recording studio, Priya’s process mirrored that of creating music – blending rhythms, tones and beats to create an expressive composition. Staged in a London concert hall and soundtracked by live musicians riffing over 90s and 00s hits, musical waves and notes became jacquard patterns across mohair knits and track tops, while a palette of deep umbres, reds and ochres was inspired by colours found on album artwork in Priya’s vinyl collection; more abstract tonal prints suggesting ideas of free-form jamming. Curvatures and shapes evoked the lines of classical instruments, while ideas of performance and stagewear resulted in hooded cocktail dresses and very cool 50s crooner-esque tailoring (think if James Brown was in The Rat Pack) and on foot models wore UGG’s customised with colourful beading. What’s more, scan a QR code on each garment to listen to a playlist that inspired their creation.
