That ’70s Show
This season, Adam Jones was in a nostalgic mood. Drawing inspiration from the 1970s, a time he described in the show notes as “a simpler, more optimistic time,” the colour palette echoed this sentiment, with warm browns, oranges, and reds abound. Jones’ signature tea towel pieces were back but this time recalled a period when being “house proud” was the height of domestic culture. Think Abigail’s Party, think food preserved in aspic, think the white lacy curtains turning brown from the tobacco tar in the air.
Transport references ran throughout the collection, with moquette fabric that was originally found on the seats of District Line carriages and Routemaster buses being reimagined as mohair jumpers and a tank top and skirt ensemble. Bus seat patterns were translated into skirts, while 70s football jerseys informed numerous pieces. Classic TV shows, such as Only Fools and Horses and Some Mothers Do ‘Ave ‘Em, also influenced Jones’ designs. For example, the iconic camo-patterned ex-army jacket worn by Rodney in Only Fools and Horses inspired trousers, skirts, and shorts, while Frank Spencer’s infamous tank top also made its way into the collection.
As Jones wrote in the show notes, “These garments all developed naturally from memories, and this collection almost has a smell to me when I look at it, a smell of nostalgia, and cigarettes.”
