Acne Studios SS24: a mash-up of things you pick up on vacation

“For spring, I was thinking about how young men in the 17th-century would go on a ‘Grand Tour’ to see important destinations across Europe, and come home more cultivated,” says Acne Studios creative director Jonny Johansson of this season’s inspiration. He’d recently taken a trip to Venice and wanted to emulate that strange way your suitcase becomes a mix of personal belongings and things you randomly pick up on your travels, adapting your look in tune with where you land.

With this in mind, looks become eccentric collages of places, experiences and styles. Knits over hoodies, shirts under vests, studded dungarees and translucent raincoats. Peace signs and fluffy knits. Garments tie around the body and hang loose with rockstar appeal, and trinkets dangle from necklaces. Sleeves on sleeves, and piles of bracelets you can’t quite remember getting, crafted from ribbons and telephone cords. Some looks resembled sci-fi alien outfits, while others were more hand-spun hippie. Denim is at the centre of everything –”It’s an axle for everything else, and you can wear it anywhere,” said Johansson. Here, it was treated with a metallic coating of antique-silver, chopped, bleached and repurposed as belts and padded like moto pants. The collection also featured a collaboration with Swedish ceramist and glass artist Per B. Sundberg, whose collages of kitsch curios and figurines became distorted prints on glossy materials, mimicking the appearance of glass.
