Deep Dark Waters
Aaron Esh understands the glamour of a good night. That heady mix of dressed-up, sexed-up tailoring and an irreverent spirit dictated by the soundtrack and setting of the evening. Call it lo-fi refinement: a meeting of stagecraft and handcraft created in East London bedrooms, studios and bars; executed with utmost dedication, craft and authenticity.
Since first appearing on the London schedule, Esh has quickly established himself as one of the city’s most thrilling and accomplished talents. Designing from what he knows, what he sees around him, he brings London’s nightlife into the light; debonair suiting, sensual sheer fabrics, frayed silk, tough leathers and denim as straight and slim as your Marlboroughs. At once rebellious and romantic, Rockins scarves are ethereal embellishments, bias-cut velvet wraps the body, and layers are designed to be thrown on, off, swapped, worn in, and worn out. Drawing from Savile Row tailoring as much as 80s post-punk and 00s indie, Esh creates a lexicon of his own, one that speaks to a new generation cutting, stitching and distorting their references anew.
And a family affair! Katy England styled the show, Primal Scream’s Deep Dark Waters soundtracked, and Lux Gillespie walked. This sort of epitomised Esh’s thinking this season: a reverence for tradition and mischief passed up, down and across generations, each influencing the other. Feedback rings out – united in attitude and taste.
