Sofia Coppola is debuting her new film at Cannes in May, and ahead of the premiere the trailer has just been released.

Titled The Beguiled, it’s Coppola’s first major film since The Bling Ring (2013), and tells the story of an injured soldier, John McBurney (Colin Farrell), who takes refuge in a girl’s boarding school run by a conniving Martha Farnsworth (Nicole Kidman).

The blood-soaked film, due to be released in cinemas 23rd June, is set in Virginia during the Civil War and is based on Thomas P. Cullinan’s 1966 novel A Painted Devil. It’s not the first time the story has graced the big screen – in 1971, Don Siegel directed Clint Eastwood and Geraldine Page in a filmic version of the book.

When the wounded soldier arrives the house becomes bewitched with sexual tension and rivalries between the sheltered group of virginal girls erupt. The mysterious man soon bites off more than he can chew and is swiftly hit by the wrath of this peculiar set of women, with a whole range of unexpected and devious acts.
