Having been appointed as G-Star RAW’s executive creative director in October last year, Aitor Throup presented his second collection for the brand’s Raw Research offshoot (the first in his new position) at this season’s Paris Fashion Week Men’s.

Inside the vast Palais de Tokyo, Raw Research II saw the Argentinian designer showcase pieces that played with denim innovation, taking the brand’s iconic 3D denim concept and toying with fresh ideas including their new ‘Motac’ series, pairing rigid denim with flexible fabric panels to allow greater freedom of movement.

“For us as being a denim and clothing specialist that is constantly challenging the status quo and exploring the possibilities of denim, our innovation laboratory RAW Research allows us to experiment with product design by clashing tradition and innovation,” says Throup.

Working from the brand’s Amsterdam base, Throup took influence from the Dutch master paintings synonymous with the city, reinterpreting Hans Bollongier’s Floral Still Life painting as a T-shirt print and using the Dutch tulip as a conceptual backdrop. Created at G-Star Raw’s innovation laboratory, the designer observed body movement and experimented with different materials and compositions to create versatile pieces.

“The denim garments in our Motac series, for example, have been combined with elasticated rib panels that were inserted and constructed in a way to allow your body to move freely in the garment… all styles presented in Raw Research II are offered in both black rinsed and washed to almost white using the same premium 13oz selvedge denim made by renowned Italian mill Candiani.”
