Today, London’s V&A proved that pigs can indeed fly, as one floated above the iconic building to mark their latest exhibition announcement: a retrospective Pink Floyd exhibition, which will run from May to October 2017.

The Pink Floyd Exhibition: Their Mortal Remains, marks 50 years since the release of the band’s debut single, Arnold Layne, and is set to be an immersive and theatrical experience, showcasing a laser light show (a nod to the band’s expansive live sets) and previously unseen material.

Hoping to replicate the success of its 2003 David Bowie exhibition, the V&A promise “a story of sound, design and performance, the exhibition will chronicle the music, iconic visuals and staging of the band.” Tracing the band’s storied history, “from the underground psychedelic scene in 1960s London to the present day, illustrating their groundbreaking use of special effects, sonic experimentation, powerful imagery and social commentary.”

Having formed in 1965 by four Cambridge students – Syd Barrett, Roger Waters, Rick Wright and Nick Mason (Barrett was later replaced with David Gilmour) – Pink Floyd soundtracked the cultural changes before them, from trippy psychedelia to prog-rock odysseys.  Across music, film and art, the band have left their defining mark, from imagery of pigs flying over Battersea Power Station to The Dark Side of the Moon prism, the Floyd’s influence lives on.

Featuring more than 350 objects and artefacts including spectacular set and construction pieces from album covers and stage performances, instruments, music technology, original designs, architectural drawings, handwritten lyrics and psychedelic prints and posters, the show offers a 360 view of the legendary four-piece.

“Pink Floyd is an impressive and enduring British design story of creative success. Alongside creating extraordinary music, they have for over five decades been pioneers in uniting sound and vision, from their earliest 1960s performances with experimental light shows, through their spectacular stadium rock shows, to their consistently iconic album covers.” Said V&A director Martin Roth.

The Pink Floyd Exhibition: Their Mortal Remains runs from 13th May to 1st October next year. Wish you were here? You can be, tickets are on sale now.
