head on
It might be difficult to strike a balance between teenage and adulthood. Play too safe and you seem naïve. Go too far and people will call you a rebel. But every now and then friendship can shape destinies and define personalities. And Mourn, those impetus Catalonia natives responsible for some seriously catchy beats since 2014, have now found who they truly are and certified their sonic identity. They may have picked their band name with eyes shut, but they know exactly where to leave their footprint in the post-rock scenario.
Between cokes (of the cola variety) and cigarettes, Jazz Rodríguez (vox, guitar), Antonio Postius (drums), Leia Rodríguez (bass) and Carla Pérez (vox, guitar) switched on and plugged away. The results? Their eponymous 2014 debut record, a raw, feral buzz recorded in a mere 48 hours. The music industry can be testing, but they face it with utter confidence and an innate talent to match. For now, the only certainty is that the pleasure of recording and playing has to remain 100 percent, and with the recent release of their second record (in as many years), Ha, Ha, He, that appetite remains intact, and then some.
Mariana Viseu Malaparte: In two years you managed to record two albums, play an overseas tour and you are all still under 21. Do you find that people still treat you like a bunch of kids in an amateur band?
Jazz Rodríguez Bueno: Sometimes, but it’s happening less now. The first tour was just people thinking, “These are just kids!” They only respected us after listening to our songs.
Antonio Postius: When we first went on tour we had a lot of problems with people treating us in a condescending way, like kids. They thought we were cute and stuff…“I’m taller than you, you know?” [Laughs]
MVM: Do you think that your music itself has evolved since?
JRB: Yes, we have learnt a lot! I’m a better guitar player now, so I can try new things.
AP: The fact that we play every day made us better as a band and individually with our instruments. When we first started I was about to quit music. By then I already have had a few bands, but I’d also had a lot of failure and I didn’t see any point of making music. I didn’t want to play or know anything about the stardom, I was truly disappointed… One month later I was in Mourn recording. And now I want to do music more than ever.
MVM: And did the influences change from the beginning?
JRB: Yes. But we don’t think about other bands while we are writing. We all listen to different bands and then we share some songs between each other. I do think that our music is a mix. Probably the band that influenced this second album the most was Throwing Muses. I was listening to them daily when I was on the bus going to school and I think you can hear that reflected in our music.
MVM: In less than 48 hours you will release the second album. How does it feel?
JRB: Ahhhhhh… That’s true! It feels very, very good!
AP: I’m excited! It took us so long, so much sweat and tears. In fact, I’ll be at a Radiohead concert that day. Not celebrating, just like a normal Spanish guy.
MVM: Is this album what fans might be expecting?
JRB: From all that I’ve read in the comments, a lot of people are loving the new songs. It has been such a positive welcome.
AP: And the media keep mentioning one fundamental thing for us about this album which is progress.
“The first tour was just people thinking, “These are just kids!” They only respected us after listening to our songs.”
MVM: What can we expect of you guys in five years from now? Will you be the same as you described in your Instagram profile: “Four nerds playing music and shit at the doors of hell”?
JRB: Yeah! [laughs] With more records! I don’t know how many, but more.
AP: I hope we still are a band. I’ll be 25 and maybe by then I will have a child or something.
JRB: I don’t think so! At 25?
AP: Maybe, who knows? I don’t want to turn 40 and have a child. I want to be a dad while I’m young and be young for the baby.
JRB: Having young parents is a cool thing. My parents had me when they were nineteen, but my dad always says to me, “You won’t!”
