At the beginning of this week Radiohead erased their entire internet presence, prompting new album speculation. Not ones to leave us high and dry, today – following the release of lead track Burn the Witch – comes the drop of new track, Daydreaming, complete with a Paul Thomas Anderson-directed video. Plus, a confirmed album release date: at 7:00pm on May 8th a downloadable version of the record will be available, with a physical release marked for June 17th.
Daydreaming sees Radiohead at their orchestral best. Piano-led, the five-piece craft a layered and haunting soundscape that beguiles with emotive subtlety. The track’s accompanying video sees a perplexed Thom Yorke walking through a series of doors and passageways into various locations including car parks, a hospital and laundromats before ending up on a snowy mountaintop. In typical Radiohead fashion, the ambiguous visuals offer more questions than answers.
Anderson’s involvement is little surprise given his recent collaboration with Radiohead guitar maestro Jonny Greenwood on last year’s join film project Junun, in which the Oscar-nominated director follows Greenwood as he records his new LP in northwest India with the Israeli composer Shye Ben Tzur and regional musicians.
The as yet untitled album marks the ninth full length release from the UK band, following 2011’s The King of Limbs.
