Sex, drugs and papier-mâché

Adam Green’s mind works differently to most, balancing in that delicately brilliant zone bordering ‘warped’ and ‘genius’.
When, in 2014, the former Moldy Peaches singer, first announced plans to make an adaptation of Aladdin eyebrows were raised. And now that the project is fully realised and a full length trailer has hit the internet, eyebrows have hit peak ‘huh?’. After all, this is not your average Aladdin narrative. For starters, it’s set entirely inside a papier-mâché world, and that’s just the tip of the trippy iceberg – we haven’t even mentioned the 3D printer or asparagus chair yet.
Funded by Kickstarter, the film boasts an impressive cast of creative talent. Natasha Lyonne, Macaulay Culkin, Alia Shawkat, Zoë Kravitz, Regina Spektor and Devendra Banhart, Har Mar Superstar and even acclaimed Italian artist Francesco Clemente all star.
“It’s my own version of Aladdin wherein the lamp is a 3D printer, the princess is a decadent socialite like a Kardashian, and the planet gets a sex change,” explains Green. “It’s a feature film, it’s a soundtrack album, it’s a massive NYC community art-project, and it’s going to be a world tour that will begin in spring of this year!
The official synopsis states:
Set in the modern day world, Adam’s hyper-sensory, poetic and humorously subversive take on the classic Arabian Nights tale stars Adam as Aladdin living with his dysfunctional family in a “regular” American town ruled by a corrupt Sultan with a decadent socialite daughter.
Aside from starring in and writing the production’s entire soundtrack – which he’ll also tour (including a London date) – Green has even made all the props, from tables to the camel and is curating a host of international art shows where you’ll be able to submerge yourself in his hallucinogenic sets.
