This week Saint Laurent open a new flagship Tokyo store on the Omotesando avenue, the house’s largest outlet worldwide.

As we have come to expect from Creative Director Hedi Slimane, the store’s concept represents an extension of his design ethos. Like other flagships, the three-floor location comes decked in the signature black and white marble, with clothes suspended on mirrored hangbars and shelves.

The sleek designs are very much in tune with the house’s minimalist Art Deco aesthetic, however the concept Slimane has developed for his inaugural Japanese boutique extends further than most. Take the furnishings, for instance, each piece of vintage furniture has been hand selected by Slimane, featuring work by renowned designers such as Jay Spectre and Gerrit Thomas Rietveld.

And amongst the furnishings, including towering golden palm trees, the store also boasts one of Slimane’s gold, fluorescent slot machines (the only one in Asia). This one-armed bandit replaces cherries, ‘7’s and ‘BAR’s with Saint Laurent Monogram bags and Wyatt 40 side fringe ankle boots. Kerching indeed.

“The opening of our largest flagship in Japan marks an important step in the development strategy of the brand, both globally and in a market that has been very receptive to Hedi Slimane’s reform project for Saint Laurent since its start in 2012,” said Francesca Bellettini, chief executive officer of Saint Laurent

Carrying Saint Laurent’s full line of ready-to-wear, leather goods and accessories for men and women the store highlights Slimane’s visual ambiance, a 360 degree aesthetic that underpins his overall vision.

To commemorate the opening of the Omotesando store, limited-edition Saint Laurent surf boards will be on sale in two different designs, created together with Los Angeles-based artist Lucia Ribisi, and only ten will be available throughout the world.
