We bring you our guide to living well in the world’s capitals, from exhibitions to cinema, food, drink, fashion, music and beyond. Just call it culture and take it, it’s yours.

LONDON, FRIDAY 27th NOVEMBER – SUNDAY 29th NOVEMBER 2015

Film

Leader of the gang
Lately, Johnny Depp’s instinct hasn’t been so killer, taking a number of ‘what-the-hell-were-you-thinking’ roles (yes, we’re looking at you MortdecaiThe Lone RangerDark Shadows). But his latest film Black Mass sees Depp back to his untouchable best, in full psychopath mode. All piercing eyes and ruthless demeanour.

In 80s Boston one man ruled the roost, notorious US mob boss James ‘Whitey’ Bulger. For twelve years he featured on the FBI’s Most Wanted list but remained on the run until 2013 when he was eventually convicted of eleven murders and numerous other crimes. You can currently find him serving a life sentence at a federal penitentiary in Florida.

Like Scorsese at his best, Black Mass runs the line between chillingly off-kilter and intimately engaging.

Black Mass, 122 mins. In cinemas now.

Exhibition

Through the lens
Beetles+Huxley and Osbourne Samuel’s annual collaborative photography exhibition The Photographers is back, showcasing over 150 prints by some of the world’s greatest photographers, ranging from 1910 to the present day.

From war photography to contemporary fashion imagery, it’s a strong line up. David Bailey, Peter Lindbergh, Richard Avedon and Henri Cartier-Bresson are just a few names in the mix.

Championing the muse as well as the photographer, this year’s exhibition will also feature The Kate Moss Portfolio, curated by Mossy herself. The queen of Croydon has delved into her portfolio and selected 11 of her favourites, including images by Mario Testino, Annie Leibovitz and Juergen Teller.

The Photographers 2015 runs until 23 December at Osborne Samuel, 23a Bruton Street, W1 and Beetles + Huxley, 3–5 Swallow Street, W1

Gig

Revel in it
From the sandy shores of Brighton hail Black Honey, a four piece with a visceral sound and rampant spirit to match. It’s 60s garage with a noir heart, all suede jackets and knee high boots.

With only a few tracks floating about online they are still a relative unknown, but catch the band live and it’s certification that these four are the real deal. Lucky for you the band are playing at Hackney’s sparkly Moth Club this weekend.

Kick back, drop the needle and let Black Honey sweep you off your feet. Honey never tasted so sweet.

Black Honey play at Moth Club on Sunday 29th November. Tickets are free through the band

Exhibition

No trainers allowed
Young Irish artist Genieve Figgis finds a whimsical middle ground between the baroque court painter tradition and dark psychedelic tropes.

Her latest UK exhibition, All the Light We Cannot See, sees her explore the absurdity of history and power dynamics as she unites an abiding interest in history with a penchant for the macabre. It’s gentrification through gothic eyes (the exhibition’s location on Savile Row seems somewhat apt).

All the Light We Cannot See runs until 19th December at Almine Rech Gallery

Food + Drink

Stuff yourself
Here in the UK we’ve adopted many different traditions from our transatlantic neighbours; burger joints, Black Friday mayhem, high school proms, the word ‘awesome’. So why has it taken us this long to import Thanksgiving over to our shores? (Eating a shit load of food and getting drunk: that sounds right up our street.)

Well this year we’re going all Americana, leave those turkey twizzlers in the freezer to rot and head to Thank Ya Papa for a big ol’ New Orleans Thanksgiving throw down. Boasting a mouth watering ten course menu and blues, soul and jazz live band performances, top entertainment value. We can all be thankful for that.

Thank Ya Papa – A Thanksgiving Feast November 25 – 27, Styx, Tottenham Hale
