Hot wired
The three Traylens may be brothers by day but stay awhile and you’ll find them moonlighting as The Venus Lyx. Creating visceral hotwired rock ‘n’ roll comes naturally to these Surrey-hailing siblings: having only recently formed under this moniker they have already defined their own hot-blooded sound, and it’s heavy enough to have already stirred a bit of buzz. Rumours are often falsified, but in the case of The Venus Lyx it all rings true.
Joining a lineage of thrilling, confrontational bands trailing back to the primordial origins of Rock ‘n’ Roll and onto the likes of The Sonics, The Gun Club and The Birthday Party are The Venus Lyx. Theirs is a thunderous, dramatic world of tempestuous femme fatales, and (according to their press release) ‘One of witchcraft and zealotry, biblical wrath and holy fire. Of cats, dogs, rats, frogs, and sexual deviancy’.
Prowling guitar music with a re-enforced backbone The Venus Lyx manifest a sound built on tension and menace so fully realised that the odour of stale cigarettes and spilled whiskey practically smokes from the speakers. Their calling card ‘Keep Your Hands Off My Familiar’ is a white-hot blast of delinquent seediness. A high velocity rampage that sweats with gritty naughtiness, dosed in the blackest of humour. ‘I put Our Lady in a landfill site/She was Pretty, man, so Little and Dainty/Now I’ve got my own Baudelaire magnet, baby/And I take it everywhere with me’.
Alex James Taylor: Where did the name The Venus Lyx come from?
Daniel S. Traylen: For us the name didn’t need to mean anything specific, or anything at all, it just needed to evoke something. ‘The Venus Lyx’. It’s got intent. We are it.
AJT: Keep Your Hands Off My Familiar is your debut single. Can you tell us a bit about the track?
DST: It’s a kind of bop ramble about a witch-burning. Great chorus. There’s a video coming soon which might make things a little clearer.
AJT: How long have you been together as The Venus Lyx for?
DST: We’ve been The Venus Lyx for around a year.
AJT: You conjure a pretty seedy, devious sound. Does this reflect your personalities?
DST: You’ve got us figured out all right. James is pretty, George is seedy, and I show a skilful use of underhand tactics to achieve goals.
AJT: And what sort of music did you guys grow up with?
DST: All sorts, but we never stop searching. Here’s our current top five albums, in no particular order from no particular era:
1. Salad Days by Mac DeMarco
2. Ruby Vroom by Soul Coughing
3. Black Messiah by D’Angelo
4. Gris-Gris by Dr John
5. Goat by The Jesus Lizard
AJT: Can you describe to me your songwriting process?
DST: We all live together so the process is always ongoing. An individual idea gets brought into the room, and usually we’ll work on it together until we have a more defined direction for it.
AJT: We’ve heard that your live shows are pretty ferocious, we haven’t had the chance to see you live yet, what can we expect? Should we take precautions…
DST: We certainly think we work best as a live band. ‘Ferocious’ is a beautiful word, but really you should just come to a show and decide for yourself. If you’ve ever seen Swans before I wouldn’t worry too much. Michael Gira will destroy you.
AJT: Has any bands influenced your live show?
DST: What comes out on stage is all natural, but we’re working on a few steps. Let’s hope it doesn’t end up a real tragedy…
AJT: You recorded your debut track with singer Hannah Lou Clark, how did you guys get together? From both your Twitter accounts I see a shared appreciation of Tomato soup is involved.
DST: We met her at a pub and by the end of the night I guess you could say we were dipping our bread in each others’ tomato soup.
AJT: Your band motto is?
DST: Flex your muscles.
AJT: What can we expect from The Venus Lyx in the near future?
DST: The single comes out soon so we’re looking forward to that. There will be an EP in the coming months and we’ll be playing shows, reaching out to the people.
