Icon status
Vans just dropped its new Off The Wall campaign – it’s a big one. The brand has dipped into its stacked phone book and called in some serious music names to front the imagery: Hayley Williams, Franz Lyons of Turnstile, Travis Barker, and Vans’ own Artistic Director SZA. Skate heavy-hitters T-Funk and Lizzie Armanto round out the impressive cast.

The whole thing celebrates 60 years of the Vans Authentic, one of the most iconic, culturally-embedded sneakers ever made. Back in the 60s it was originally designed as a simple canvas deck shoe. But not long after, skaters started picking them up from thrift stores and surf shops, realising the flat sole and sticky rubber worked just as well on grip tape as it did on boat deck fibreglass.
The rest is skate history. Vans didn’t just make a shoe skaters liked, the brand became part of the culture itself. Six decades on, the Authentic still looks the same, still gets thrashed the same, and continues to evolve.
