Ode to an icon
Burberry is synonymous with gabardine. Invented in 1879 by founder Thomas Burberry, the pioneering, weatherproof fabric was engineered to offer both protection and ease – a technical innovation that would come to define the house.

Today, under the direction of Daniel Lee, the iconic gabardine trench continues to be recut and recontextualised for a new generation. In the brand’s latest campaign, The Trench: Portraits of an Icon, Burberry celebrates the garment’s enduring legacy, transcending utility to become a cultural emblem of British style. Shot by Tim Walker, the trench is worn by a cast of global talent, including Daisy Edgar-Jones, Jack Draper, Little Simz, Teyana Taylor, Kate Moss, Kid Cudi, Kristin Scott Thomas and Jonathan Bailey. Each portrait showcases the coat’s adaptability – buttoned, belted, collar popped. “Think of it as a tribute to Burberry,” Lee says, “…a symbol of British style and craftsmanship – and a thank you to the skilled individuals behind every coat.’
