Kris Van Assche’s Fred Perry collaboration reconstructs the uniform of youth

Kris Van Assche, the designer who defined an era during his tenure as artistic director of Dior Homme, has dropped a brand new capsule collection with Fred Perry. For this inaugural collection, Van Assche explored ideas around uniform and how young people dress – themes central to the designer’s codes – while the accompanying campaign is shot by Alasdair McLellan in his classic dreamy style, featuring a cast of deeply cool characters.

Taking a number of Fred Perry archetypes, such as the classic Fred Perry Shirt, Van Assche has remodelled it in a bold red and attached a trio of badges – very much a punk signifier. One of these badges features an image of a flower from Van Assche’s personal collection, a recurring motif throughout his career. The shirt is also reimagined as an actual cotton shirt, with a proper collar and buttoned placket. A black tie comes with it, already tied and adjustable depending on how formal you are feeling.

Elsewhere, a tracksuit is cut like a real suit, pinstriped and brandishing a sleeve label, showcasing Van Assche’s classic mix of streetwear and formalwear. There is even knitwear featuring trompe l’oeil techniques that make the pieces look like two garments in one. Argyle is the featured pattern, remixed in blacks and greys.
