Demna debuts his Gucci vision with a Demi Moore short film

If the past 48 hours are any indication of how Demna plans to debut his Gucci collections, we’d better stay on our toes. The day before we were scheduled to see his first pieces for the house, he dropped a surprise lookbook featuring just under 40 looks, each assigned a distinct character who embodied the outfit they wore.

Under the title La Famiglia, the Catherine Opie–lensed images were shot against a bare backdrop with each being decorated by a different frame. Some of the standout looks included La Principessa, a young women looking regal in a sheer baby pink gown, hemmed with ostrich feathers. There was La V.I.C., a tongue-in-cheek reference to the brand’s Very Important Customers, dressed head-to-toe in tan leather (coat, boots, bag), every inch plastered with the house logo. La Contessa, who wore an incredibly opulent floral gown, and Bastardo, in nothing but a G-string and a pair of flip flop, were two looks that looked back at the recent history of Gucci and the tenures of Alessandro Michele and Tom Ford, respectively.

Then, last night, Demna unveiled the first full look at his SS26 collection. In lieu of a runway show, a short film premiered during Gucci’s slot on the schedule. Directed by Spike Jonze and Halina Reijn, The Tiger follows Barbara Gucci (played by Demi Moore) as she reveals her latest collection to the journalist Harlan Whitman (Ed Harris) and attends a birthday banquet surrounded by her deeply chaotic family, played by Edward Norton, Elliot Page, Keke Palmer and Alia Shawkat. As the evening unravels, the dinner takes a surreal turn when the champagne is revealed to have been spiked with a “homoeopathic, collagen-based, root-infused vitamin tincture,” that sets off a series of bizarre hallucinations.

It was a suitably starry introduction to Demna’s vision for Gucci. At Balenciaga, he became known for the grand and elaborate way that he introduced his collections. Who could forget the time he enlisted The Simpsons to help drop a collection? If gathering Spike Jonze, Halina Reijn, Demi Moore, Ed Harris and Edward Norton is just the beginning for Demna’s Gucci, then imagine what we have coming for us.
