Yesterday’s reveal of the forthcoming Venice Film Festival line-up has us extremely excited for a solid season of movies ahead. But between the confirmation of new films from Gus Van Sant, Jim Jarmusch and Benny Safdie, there’s a pleasant surprise – Sofia Coppola will premiere a documentary about her longtime friend, Marc Jacobs.
Titled Marc by Sofia, this will be Coppola’s first documentary to date. Details are sparse about what exactly will be covered in Coppola’s doc, but given Jacobs’ vast career, we could be in for a blockbuster.
The Marc Jacobs brand originated in the mid-80s, with his first collection debuting in 1986. What followed was a creative directorship at Perry Ellis, where his infamous grunge collection made fashion history but got him fired from the job. In the late 90s, he took over Louis Vuitton and introduced ready-to-wear to the house. His love of collaboration, such as when he asked the artist Stephen Sprouse to graffiti over LV bags, led to some of modern fashion’s most iconic pieces.
Coppola has long acted as a muse to Jacobs. She appeared in several of his Louis Vuitton campaigns and recently, Jacobs’ latest venture, Heaven, dropped a capsule collection that paid homage to Coppola’s The Virgin Suicides.
