Then and now

Collier Schorr captures portraits of NYC’s queer scene for legendary gay magazine Der Eigene
By Barry Pierce | Art | 20 June 2025

In the history of gay magazines, the father of them all is Der Eigene. First published in Berlin in 1896 (yes, you read that right) the magazine ran for over 35 years and featured poems, stories and articles that were all based around a gay theme.

In 2022, the editor Luis Venegas in collaboration with Rimowa, revived the legendary magazine after almost 90 years of being out of print, and for the 4th edition of the revived Der Eigene, the magazine has partnered with photographer Collier Schorr on a series of portraits of figures from New York’s queer scene. Spanning ages and disciplines, these portraits act as profiles on the sitter’s lives, illustrating contemporary queer life in America.

The 2025 edition of Der Eigene is limited to 300 complimentary copies, which will be available from June 24th in a select number of vendors worldwide
