Nicolas Cage losing it, Photo London, and an UGG party
16 May 2025

How’s the tan coming along? Is it more red than brown? More fragile than fab?

Film

Nicolas Cage is hot and he’s mad
Cage is at his best when he’s having a serious breakdown. Luckily, in Lorcan Finnegan’s new film The Surfer, the scene is perfectly set for one of these iconic moments. It’s boiling hot on Australia’s Lunar Bay, and Cage’s character simply wants to surf with his son. But the local bros are having none of it, and continue to torment him until he loses everything – especially his mind. Cast in a psychedellic, lucid aesthetic that magnifies the heatwave insanity, The Surfer is one hell of a trip, and also delivers one of Cage’s best lines ever: “Eat the rat!” Read our interview with the film’s director here.

The Surfer is out now.

Pop-up

UGG x NTS
Across this Friday and Saturday, UGG are hosting a standalone pop-up to celebrate the brand’s summer collection, the launch of its new Goldenstars style, and Britain’s love of summer music (we make the most of it when we have it!). Timing very well with the beautiful weather, the pop-up takes over the Ninety One hi-fi lounge on Brick Lane and is designed as a creative hub, featuring tattooist Tal Booker offering temporary ink alongside workshops from the likes of record label, Saffron, and London DJ, Goya, while on Saturday NTS curates a full programme of talks and workshops culminating in a late night party.

The UGG pop-up takes place at 91 Brick Ln, London E1 6QL from 16th – 17th May.

Intimate space
Ezra Furman has always produced gold. Across multiple records spanning back to 2008, the US musician has translated their deepest feelings and fleeting memories into punky, spikey, catchy as hell music. Their latest record, Goodbye Small Head, continues Furman’s progression, sounding somewhere between Lou Reed and Thom Yorke. Celebrating their new album, Furman will be at Rough Trade East this Friday for a special live performance and record signing.

Hot new spot
Taking over the building which used to house Camberwell’s Forza Win, new South London eatery Hello JoJo opened its doors at the beginning of this month. Operating as both a restaurant and a bakery, the space will be open from breakfast through to dinner, offering up deli-inspired lunches and pastries. Dishes to note include Baker’s eggs and potato crumpet with brown butter and sticky mushrooms, Tamworth pork chop with buttery spring garlic sauce and sourdough with grilled sardines. Yum!
