She’s Back!
The legendary songstress Fiona Apple has just released her first song in five years, titled Pretrial (Let Her Go Home). The blazing track is a searing take on America’s faulty bail system, whereby people who can’t afford to pay bail end up being precariously imprisoned. The music video for the track begins with the words: “For two years, I observed thousands of court hearings as a courtwatcher. I saw so many people get caged away simply because they could not afford bail. Before they even got a trial. While still presumed innocent.”
In a statement, Apple said that she “listened as people were taken away and put in jail, for no other reason than that they couldn’t afford to buy their way free.” For anyone familiar with Apple, this track is another moment in her long legacy of being on the right side of history. In 2019, she pledged to donate two years worth of royalties from one of her biggest hits, Criminal, to refugees. She also did the same for her track Shameika from the album Fetch the Bolt Cutters but funds went to a nonprofit for children and families living in Harlem.
