Boyish
You can google Marc Kalman all you want, but you’re not going to find much. For years, Kalman has been an influential figure so deep within the industry that even basic biographic information has been hard to come by. And yet, as Travis Scott’s creative director, Kalman has shaped and informed the image and branding behind one of the planet’s most famous figures. He is, at once, incredibly famous and completely unknown.
But that may be about to change. In a rare public project, Kalman has launched his inaugural menswear clothing brand, Still Kelly. His debut collection, titled Boyish, is a 39-piece wardrobe of ready-to-wear denim, technical outerwear, elevated workwear and graphic tees. In a campaign shot by Winter Vandenbrink in London, we see superstar male models Ned Sims and Lux Gillespie outfitted in the collection.
On the occasion of the launch of Still Kelly, we asked Kalman some questions about his new brand and its campaign.
Barry Pierce: What were the beginnings of Still Kelly as a brand?
Marc Kalman: It started with a folder of graphics I’d been working on and there was one of an obscure storefront. It felt like the starting point for the brand I wanted to make that would be called Still Kelly. That graphic became The Kelly Hoodie and from there we’ve been building the rest of the collection.
BP: What is the ethos of Still Kelly? Still Kelly is for the slow burners.
MK: Be your own muse.
BP: You worked as a creative director for Travis Scott, what did you learn from that experience that you’ve brought to Still Kelly?
MK: No compromise.
BP: Tell us about the first time you met Winter Vandenbrink.
MK: I fell in love with Winter’s book, Vandals and wanted to collaborate so I reached out to him. We spoke on the phone and soon after we met for the first time in London shooting the photos for Boyish, the first collection.
BP: What is the story of the new campaign?
MK: There’s an instinctive, boyish energy to the world I wanted to build. Finding these muses and characters articulate the vision, Ned [Sims] and Lux [Gillespie] speak to that.
