Eden

Magnum’s latest print sale is a celebration and call to action for our planet
By Kimuli Eriya | Art | 22 October 2024

Magnum Photos’ square print sale returns for another year, now in collaboration with The Photo Society – a community of documentary photographers who have contributed to National Geographic. This time around, the annual photography sale is operating under the name, Eden, inspired by a theme of global beauty across landscapes, people and ecosystems – “to provoke both pause and resistance on behalf of Earth.”

Running from 21st – 27th October, you can snag yourself a 6 x 6” snapshot by a globally-renowned artist to hang on your wall and impress visitors. Consisting of 120 images hand-picked by the photographers themselves, from Myriam Boulos to Herbert List and Cornell Capa, their renderings of mankind are as beautiful as they are a reminder not to take the planet for granted.

Though Eden evokes ideas of pastoral bliss, its fall seems a more fitting way to describe the ecological mess we have found ourselves in. “Landscape photography is one of the most beloved genres,” said Cristina de Middel, Magnum president, “misty layered hills at sunrise in Tuscany, sunsets over the Grand Canyon… We love capturing the beauty around us and celebrating the magnificence of our planet. But what we must realise is that these landscape and wildlife photographs may soon be all that’s left – our only memory of the world as it once was. The only proof that Eden did exist.”
