Coco Gordon Moore on art, poetry and starring in Birkenstock 1774’s new campaign
By Alex James Taylor | Fashion | 20 February 2024

“Growing up in Western Mass [Massachusetts], the Birkenstock was definitely a staple of style. So for me, it reminds me of home.” As part of Birkenstock 1774’s latest campaign cast, Coco Gordon Moore reminisces about memories the much-loved shoes conjure. Inspired by downtown New York’s trailblazing arts scene during the 70s and 80s, the campaign celebrates these eras of artistic experimentation and collaboration, which echoes across the city’s current creative talents, such as Coco who released her latest chapbook, Waiting Room, in 2022, and performs her poetry across the city. Shot by Max Farago these portraits of young New Yorkers showcase the collection’s six styles, including newcomers the 33 Dougal and the 222 West. Timing with the campaign, we caught up with Coco for some quick-fire Q’s about her current projects, loves and recent starring role in the visuals for her mum’s (Kim Gordon) new solo track, Bye Bye.

What are you currently working on?
“Currently I’m working on a full-length book of poetry… I’m not sure what I want it to be yet but I have a lot of unpublished poems that I’m sitting on”

What are you currently reading/listening to?
“I’ve been reading Housekeeping by Marilynne Robinson and listening to Lucinda Williams”

Who’s your favourite young poet?
“That’s a hard one, there are so many great young poets right now. I love all my friends’ work, but I’d have to say my gf Riley Mac is incredible (not being biased, she’s really really good).”

What’s your favourite part of New York?
“My apartment.”

How do you see today’s NYC art scene?
“To be honest I’m not a huge part of the art scene. I go to shows sometimes, but I’m really not involved. I love the painter Charlotte Fox.”

Can you tell us about filming Bye Bye with your mum?
“I loved working on this video with my mom. It’s always fun getting to do things with her. I’m obsessed with the song and her entire album goes hard. It was a dream team honestly. I love working with Clara Balzary [director] – she had such a great vision and understands how to translate the mood of the song into a visual story. Best director. And working with Christopher Blauvelt [cinematographer] is always incredible and feels so special. It was a great crew! We had worked together on the Hungry Baby video from my mom’s last album. I love doing music videos.

The new Birkenstock 1774 collection launches on 14th march online.
