Year of the dragon

MCM & BAPE reunite for a Lunar New Year collection
By Barry Pierce | Fashion | 5 January 2024

Things were looking drastic there for a second. It’s the 5th of January, a whole five days into 2024, and we’d not yet heard word of a major fashion collab! But do not fret, MCM and BAPE are here to save the year. Building on the hype of their debut collaboration in 2019, the German and Japanese brands reunite to redefine the aesthetics and attitude of luxury streetwear, celebrating the Year of the Dragon for the Lunar New Year.

The latest MCM and BAPE Lunar New Year Edition capsule is characterised by a playfulness with pattern, fun graphic applications, and the fusion of BAPE’s shark motif with MCM’s signature Visetos. The classic BAPE STA logo becomes the centrepiece of the collaboration and is enveloped with a golden dragon symbolising confidence and irreverent style in the new year.

“We are pleased to recombine MCM’s rich heritage of artisanship & mobility with the dynamic creativity of BAPE for this next drop,” says Sabine Brunner, President of MCM. Whilst Thomas Hui, CEO of BAPE, says, “The launch of this capsule collection is an inspiring synergy of style, individuality, and an unbridled spirit of innovation.”

Reflecting an uncompromising commitment to quality craftsmanship and unconventional design, the MCM x BAPE capsule embraces a seasonless, genderless and ageless approach to style that feels like a reflection of much of the fashion that we’ll be seeing in 2024.

The MCM x BAPE collaboration is available in-store and online in selected MCM flagships and BAPE stores.
