“We are all on this ride together” – Michèle Lamy on decorating skate decks with THE SKATEROOM and Juergen Teller
By Barry Pierce | Art | 27 November 2023

“I have always been about creating spaces for people and inviting artists to create,” the legendary Michèle Lamy tells us, discussing her longstanding dedication to building skate parks skateparks across the world and celebrating skate culture. “These skate projects are an extension of my world… We are all on this ride together.”

Teaming up with her longtime collaborator Juergen Teller, Lamy has lent her image to a series of skate decks for THE SKATEROOM, an organisation close to Lamy’s heart that empowers social change and facilitates education programs in at-risk territories and countries. For almost ten years, THE SKATEROOM has sponsored skate parks all around the world and collaborated with artists such as Cindy Sherman and Yoshitomo Nara in producing limited-edition skateboards decorated with works of art.

“I’m so pleased that Jurgen agreed to participate as the freak artist that he is,” Lamy tells us. “These images were shot by Jurgen Teller for the inaugural issue of System Beauty. I’m hoping they will help us put our little two cents in the world that we would see getting a little better through our iconoclast approach.”

The decks, which display images of Lamy in the bath, her head covered in clay, a close-up of her gold-capped teeth, and Lamy laid down, her hair spread over the ground with trademark blackened fingers covering her chest. The images are an evocation of everything that Lamy is — stylish, grungy, and deeply iconic.

Charles-Antoine Bodson, Founder of the Skateroom, says “From Jordan to Pakistan, Cuba, South Africa, and Morocco, THE SKATEROOM has been funding skate parks around the world for almost ten years. These skate parks serve as an important hub for building a strong sense of community, especially for younger generations. They provide a safe space for young people to challenge themselves and celebrate their individuality while fostering acceptance and self-expression.”
