A Pedro Almodóvar western produced by Saint Laurent creative director Anthony Vaccarello and starring Ethan Hawke and Pedro Pascal. No this is not a wonderful dream we had, it’s the Spanish auteur’s latest short film, titled Strange Way of Life.

Set to premiere at this year’s Cannes Film Festival in May, with Almódovar, Hawke and Pascal in attendance, the short centres around two hired gunmen who reconnect after a 25-year separation. And Vaccarello’s part in this? All the characters are costumed by Saint Laurent.

Almodóvar provided further detail of the film’s plot following the Cannes announcement: “A man rides a horse across the desert that separates him from Bitter Creek. He comes to visit Sheriff Jake [Hawke]. Twenty-five years earlier, both the sheriff and Silva [Pascal], the rancher who rides out to meet him, worked together as hired gunmen. Silva visits him with the excuse of reuniting with his friend from his youth, and they do indeed celebrate their meeting, but the next morning Sheriff Jake tells him that the reason for his trip is not to go down the memory lane of their old friendship.”

Strange Way of Life is Almodóvar’s second work in the English language, his first being 2020’s The Human Voice starring Tilda Swinton.
