We’ve been good, we promise

A very HERO Christmas gift guide
22 December 2022

With each Christmas, we fully appreciate that your gift game can become more tired and accepting of mediocrity. But it shouldn’t. And it won’t. Here we present a very HERO gift guide to inspire your gift-giving, or just as a shopping list for some good ol’ self-love.

Celine Moon Zipped Boots with harness in calfskin black (£1,100)
Wardrobe essentials: Hedi Slimane boots. This year we’d like these Celine harness boots in calfskin, crafted with pinpoint precision, pointed toe and an attitude that bites. Ta, Santa.

Prada Saffiano Leather Bolo Tie (£225)
John Travolta in Pulp Fiction, Clint Eastwood in Coogan’s Bluff, Dennis Hopper in Blue Velvet and Duckie in Pretty in Pink, what have they all got in common? That’s right, bolo ties.

An Americana staple, this Prada version – with an enamel triangle logo – brings some classic Italian minimalism to the bolo game: from ranch to restaurant.

Dennis Hopper’s The Last Movie OST LP (£23.99)
Dennis Hopper’s experimental 1971 film The Last Movie might not be a traditionally recognised Christmas watch, however, we don’t play by the rules, and will be rewatching the iconic film this year, like every other.

But not only is it a visual treat, it also boasts an incredible soundtrack featuring tracks by Kris Kristofferson and John Buck Wilkin, alongside Peruvian folk music recorded live on set in Peru. Plus, dialogue from Dennis and his co-stars, alongside sounds of the mountains and villages of South America – very Hopper. The record is also packaged with rare vintage photos and detailed notes.

Givenchy Lock Asymmetrical Earrings (£470)
Matthew M Williams has translated his signature Givenchy buckle motif into a pair of symmetrical earrings, cast in polished and guilloche metal. Make a statement, make getting through airport security impossible.

S.T. Dupont Yellow Gold Finish Natural Lacquer Lighter (£945)
A symbol of regality for rockstars and royalty alike, S. T. Dupont lighters are the ultimate luxury lifestyle accessory – each piece is hand-crafted to exact standards. commemorates the maison’s 150th anniversary, boasting a diamond head and sunset hues. To pull out one of these beauties in the smoking area, now that’s a move.

Collier Schorr Neighbours / Nachbarn 1st Edition, 2006, MACK (£95)
Shot across a twelve-year period Schorr spent in Southern Germany, this 1st edition photobook depicts a small town, blending reality with fiction to create a complex story of memory, emigration and family.

GALLERY

Star Horse Limited Signed Print (£200)
Tuftluck (aka Kara Rose Marshall) is one of our favourite independent artists working in London, and we’d very much like to populate every room with her incredible watercolour cowboy prints. This lovely fella on his star horse really called to us – Yee-haw!

Chrome Hearts Culinary Gift Box (available exclusively at Selfridges)
Chrome Hearts has designed something that looks like it contains sex toys but actually contains culinary tools. Intrigued? Of course you are. Inside this padlocked, hand-carved box, you’ll find a pair of Ketchup and mustard condiment bottles, salt and pepper shakers and corn-cob holders, alongside quilted oven mitts (very 50 Shades) and a washed blue denim apron. Imagine rocking up for dinner and someone whips out one of these – it’s a conversation starter, for sure.

Saint Laurent Long Single-Breasted Coat in Sequinned Tweed (£3,425)
Our New Year’s resolution is to wear this Saint Laurent coat everyday, all year long, beginning with NYE as we stun everyone with our mirrorball shimmer.

Dark Arts Coffee Lost Highway espresso, 250g (£9)
Dark Arts Coffee provide the best wake-up call in town. Grown in the southeastern state of Brazil, Minas Gerais – the birthplace of musicians like Milton Nascimento and Sepultura – this particular espresso is not only rich and tasty, but it’s also named after Lynch’s classic 1997 movie.

Martin Parr breakfast tray (£55)
We’re getting hungry just looking at this Martin Parr breakfast tray. However, where are the hash browns? And that bacon looks a lil floppy.

JW Anderson Anchor Logo Hoodie (£790)
Back off Granny, the only knits we’ll be wearing this year are ones designed by Jonathan Anderson.

Mick (blue) Surfboard after Andy Warhol (£11,638.71)
This will be an easy one to guess when it’s all wrapped and placed under our tree. So if it’s not there, we’ll notice – just saying.

Les Necessaires d’Hermes Folding Desk (£52,130)
Let’s be honest, working from home during lockdown would’ve been a lot more enjoyable had we been able to do so on our very own Hermès folding desk. Beautifully crafted by designer Philippe Nigro, the piece is built with retractable pulls, drawers, a secret compartment and a magazine rack – for all those copies of HERO. Plus, it all folds up neatly once the working day is done.

Loewe owl charm in felt and calfskin (£295)
Just look at its little face! We want this fella to join us on our daily travels, bringing us good luck and good company – what a hoot!

Velvet Underground Scrapbook Vol.1 (£35.00)
Available at Idea Books, this incredible staple bound publication features sixty pages of bootleg printed photos, reviews, quotes, album ads and paraphernalia stretching from the mid-60s to the Velvet Underground’s reunion in Paris, 1990. Think of it as the ultimate DIY VU annual.

Amiri’s Wes Lang Big Skull Blouson (£2,550)
Everything from Amiri’s FW22 collection, created in dialogue with US artist Wes Lang gets a big thumbs up from us, but this blouson is particularly special. Decorated in Lang’s hand-painted skull motifs and cut in Amiri’s signature relaxed silhouette, the idea of being a walking artwork has never been so appealing.

Gucci Star Eye velvet three panel screen (£13,220)
Who needs walls when you can have Gucci panel screens, we want our studio to look like Turner’s (Mick Jagger) apartment in Performance, all sultry mystique and Persian rugs.

Keith Haring Schott Motorcycle Jacket Painting, by Keith Haring (price upon request)
The perfecto is the most iconic jacket. But we have plenty of those in the wardrobe already. What we’d like this year is a little bit special: a Schott NYC iteration hand-painted by Keith Haring. With one of the NYC artist’s signature graphics drawn across the back of the garment, this is a unique piece designed to be worn, thrashed and enjoyed.

A classic Old Fashioned from The Fumoir at Claridge’s (£20)
The intimate cocktail bar hidden inside Claridge’s is without doubt one of the most comforting and luxurious places to whet your whistle. As William Klein portraits gaze down from the walls, sit back with a perfectly prepared glass of something: our usual is a classic old-fashioned. Somehow, we’d like one of these delivered to us on Christmas day, in fact, if you could transport us to The Fumoir, even better.

M&M’s Peanut Chocolate Pouch Bag 125g
It’s Christmas, therefore: chocolate. And over here at HERO we’re big fans of peanut M&M’s. The more the better.

MXR® x Third Man Hardware Double Down™ pedal
Jack White sure knows a thing or two about making a guitar sound like a crazed banshee. So we assume if we buy this new pedal by The White Stripes frontman’s Third Man Records we’ll be able to sound just as good as him? Worth a go.

Nick Cave’s Up Jumped the Devil Milk Jug (£40)
Within his music, Nick Cave is able to blend the richest of emotion and depth. Therefore, we assume he also makes a pretty decent brew. This Christmas we’d like to sit down for a nice cuppa with the man himself, served with his very own porcelain milk jug, on sale at Cave’s Cave Things store (alongside many other unusual gifts). Milk and one sugar please, Nick.

Set of eight dessert plates – Dior (£900)
We’re having everyone ’round ours for Christmas dinner this year. Only we CBA to cook… but why spoil these lovely Dior dessert plates with our terrible food? More drinks, anyone?

Adidas Zissou shoes (£499)
Yes, these are the same sneakers worn by Steve Zissou (aka Bill Murray) in Wes Anderson’s film The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou. Released in super limited edition quantities after years of fans pleading with the German sportswear company, these Zissou-ed Roms are part of movie history you can get far in.

Rick Owens Carving Fork (€2,100)
We’re very into the idea of slicing our Christmas turkey with this Rick Owens bone handle carving fork.

Tetley Bitter Beer Towel Vest by Adam Jones (£198)
Two things we love about Christmas: drinking lots of tinnies and wearing lovely knitwear. Welsh designer Adam Jones has combined the two with the kind of functionality we dig. Get us one of these and we’ll be bitter no more.

Fendi drawstring backpack (£1,650)
New year, new Fendi bag. This one features an adjustable drawstring closure and a detachable strap, offering the luxury of adaptation and practicality.

Raf Simons Redux FW01 Tokyo Hoodie (£492)
We’d like this Raf Simons Redux hoodie from the designer’s Riot, Riot, Riot collection so we can use the sleeves to wipe away our tears every time we remember Simons has closed his eponymous brand.

I Was A Teenage Banshee by Sue Webster (£40)
If you know London artist Sue Webster, you’ll know about her Siouxsie and the Banshees obsession. Inside this impressive Rizzoli book, Webster documents her Siouxsie fandom from childhood to present, featuring obsessive scrapbooking of ticket stubs, personal diary memoirs and photographs from her youth. Linked by the four Siouxsie Sioux records, Webster’s fanatic mind links the works to a breadth of cultural and personal history, drawing a lineage that crosses Edvard Munch with Richard Hamilton, The Beatles, Patti Smith and Webster’s own childhood experiences.

Papo’s Large Bagel Bundle (£65)
We think Papo’s bagels are the best in town – and believe us, we’ve eaten a lot. Founded by two Newyorkers living in East London, these two have the credentials.

So what we’d like is a massive box of fresh bagels with smoked salmon and schmear to fill our Christmas carb quota, please.

Limited edition “Golden TRUX” Royal Trux jacket
We basically want Jennifer Herrema’s whole wardrobe. But this excellent limited-edition Golden Trux jacket designed by the Royal Trux icon will cease our begging for now. Oh, it’s sold out online, so you’ll have to use your detective skills for this one.

Mark Rothko Untitled (Red and Orange on Salmon), original work, Sotherby’s
We have a spot on our wall which is just the right size for this original Mark Rothko artwork. On auction at Sotherby’s with an estimate reaching well into the eight-figure digits, we find this piece brings us a sense of calm and serenity, which, when you think about it, is priceless really. Keep that in mind when you see those prices hike up.

Raissa Pardini’s Damo Suzuki print (A2 – £70)
Pardini’s signature graphic design never fails to hit the mark. Having created posters for the likes of Fontaines DC, Idles and The Orielles, we’ve picked out this Damo Suzuki print from the Can legend’s September performance at London’s Old Blue Last. In Pardini’s typically retro aesthetic, words drip into each other like Suzuki’s krautrock rhythms.

MSGM Christmas Limited Edition Blanket (£185)
“Dear Santa, this year please give me this MSGM blanket” – hey Santa, listen to the blanket.

Daniel w. Fletcher DWF Patch Beret (£80)
Sign us up for the DWF beret brigade! With such a stylish uniform, it’s a gang we sure wanna be part of.

Bully Larry Clark (£300)
You know when you have people over so you rearrange the coffee table with the books you want people to notice? Bully by Larry Clark is the one you put in pride of place. Published in 2001, the book contains photos and interviews from the set of Clark’s classic crime drama starring Michael Pitt. Grainy teenage dreams never looked so good.

Supreme Chucky Doll (£373)
Look, it’s Chucky wearing Supreme: what hypebeast nightmares are made of.

Iceage: Shake the Feeling – Outtakes And Rarities 2015-2021, vinyl (£22.99)
This year saw the Copenhagen band release a compilation of rough cuts and rarities from across their last three records. The resulting LP acts as a visceral sonic timeline documenting the four-piece’s soaring musical evolution.
