It’s official: Real Madrid and France striker Karim Benzema is the best player in men’s world football, picking up the covetable Ballon d’Or prize at this year’s ceremony in Paris.

For such a prestigious occasion, Benzema stepped out in a custom Fendi made-to-measure navy tuxedo with satin embroidered waistband, having become the Italian fashion house’s newest ambassador earlier this year. Recognise that shawl collar, round gold glasses and black chocker bowtie? The outfit was an ode to Benzema’s idol Tupac Shakur, channelling the musician’s look worn at the 1996 American Music Awards.

Benzema’s Ballon d’Or win comes after a record-breaking year, scoring 44 goals in 46 games as he helped Real Madrid win the Champions League and La Liga in 2021-22 – his last-minute Champions League goals becoming an incredible inevitability. Benzema’s win made him the first Frenchman to take home the award since Zinedine Zidane in 1998.
