Snowboarding brand Burton announce a Virgil Abloh collaboration with meaning
By Bailey Slater | Fashion | 10 March 2022

“PRODUCT THAT BY ITS EXISTENCE NOT ONLY STANDS AS EVIDENCE FOR THE EVOLUTION OF A SUBCULTURE AND SPORT BUT BECOMES AN ARTIFACT WHICH PROVES THAT DIVERSITY WITHIN SNOWBOARDING IS NOT ONLY AN IDEA, IT’S ACTUALLY HAPPENING, CARE OF BURTON and VIRGIL ABLOH.”

This is the manifesto created by the late, visionary designer Virgil Abloh for his second collection with Burton. Teaming up with the arctic outerwear mavens for a dynamic release of exclusive boards in bold camo prints and a selection of killer, reflective snow gear, Abloh was resolute about the offering truly standing for something, encompassing a larger message in the world of snowsports.

Speaking of the fight for diversity that characterised his life and legacy, Burton’s Chief Creative Officer, Adrian Josef Margelist said: “Every person who worked on this project, from the snowboard designers and the project managers to the riders at the photo shoot took Virgil’s words to heart. They became our manifesto, our mantra, our motivation.”

With the high-stakes sport itself proving a huge influence in Abloh’s design work, Burton have pledged $300,000 over three years to causes dedicated to increasing BIPOC representation in the snowboarding world, running adjacent to a digital auction of ten exclusive snowboards, set to be sold on March 15th in a fundraiser organised by the Virgil Abloh™ “Post-Modern” Scholarship Fund.

Looking to the funds’ aims in ‘foster[ing] equity and inclusion within the fashion industry by providing scholarships to students of academic promise of Black, African American, or African descent’, Burton hope to honour the designer’s legacy by supporting diversity initiatives in the sport on a global scale. This ones for you, Abloh.
