Earlier this month, musician Pete Doherty married his long-term partner Katia de Vidas – who is the keyboardist in Doherty’s band the Puta Madres – at a ceremony in the French city of Etretat, where they have lived together for the past three years. For this momentous occasion, Doherty wore a custom suit made by designer Hedi Slimane. The suit featured a classic two-button jacket in black wool gabardine and matching trousers, paired with a drugstore collar shirt with musketeer cuff and derby shoes in shiny calfskin.

Slimane and Doherty share a long friendship that began in the early 2000s when Slimane documented the musician for his acclaimed 2005 photo book Birth of a Cult: a visual chronicle of eighteen months in the life of Doherty and the raw and chaotic music scene he ignited. At this point, Slimane was the revered designer at Dior Homme revolutionising menswear codes, and Doherty was a lost romantic becoming the world’s biggest rockstar as co-frontman, alongside Carl Barat, of his band The Libertines – their seminal debut record, Up the Bracket, was released in 2002. Forging a tight friendship, since then Doherty has attended Slimane’s shows and worn his collections. Below, we look back through some of the key imagery inside Slimane’s Birth of a Cult.
