Come and have a go
Last October saw London-based soul artist Aden announced as the inaugural winner of the Nicholas Daley x Fred Perry Music Grant, earning recording time at the legendary Metropolis Studios with industry experts on hand. Now the Grant returns, offering a huge opportunity for a new bunch of talented musicians seeking to make it big. Open now until 5th August, the only qualification is that you have to be an unsigned British artist.
Once all entries are in, they will be judged by an esteemed panel that includes musicians Nilufer Yanya, Nubya Garcia, DJs Bradley Zero and Gilles Peterson, and music writer Tara Joshi. The winning application wins recording time with the Metropolis team alongside masterclass advice from brand and campaign support, and masterclass prep and planning. While the winner and four runners up will also feature on a special Fred Perry x Nicholas Daley compilation record.
What’s more, this second Grant comes alongside the release of Daley and Fred Perry’s latest collaboration that, needless to say, is rooted in music. Informed by reggae legend and keen martial artist Peter Tosh, silhouettes borrowed from Fred Perry’s archive are repurposed in tune with the functionality and fabrication of martial arts clothing, alongside the bold Jamaican influences that first filtered into British subculture during the 70s.
“Music is the unifying force between our brands and plays a key role in each collaboration collection,” says Daley. “That is why during a time when the music industry is under great threat we decided to pull together and offer the music grant to support the next generation of musicians here in the UK. I have pulled together a diverse and experienced judging panel who will bring their expertise within the industry to select our grant winner and I am looking forward to seeing this project come to fruition.
Grant applications are now open – more info here.
