Wonderlab

Swarovski’s first-ever creative director brings a collection where science and magic collide

Last year, Giovanna Battaglia Engelbert was announced as Swarovski‘s first creative director in the brand’s storied 125-year history. Now, the Italian fashion industry figure has revealed her debut collection.

Underscored by a rallying call of “Ignite your dreams”, Engelbert’s vision is set in an imaginary “Wonderlab”, emphasising the fantasy and innovation of her Swarovski. “The Wonderlab is an idea, it is an imagined place that embodies everything Swarovski stands for and that will continue to inspire us for years to come,” says the designer. “The Wonderlab is where science and magic meet, where extra and elegance collide, it is a feeling of wonder that everyone should experience as we invite them into our new world at Swarovski.”

Setting out her blueprint, Engelbert’s inaugural collection hones in on the “geometry of crystal and its potential as a material.” Named Collection #1, after Article #1, the first crystal founder Daniel Swarovski ever sketched, Engelbert channels the house’s heritage into a vibrant and contemporary curation. Playing with scale, cut and colour, rings are blown up into hyper chunky silhouettes that sit like glimmering ice cubes on fingers, earrings become thick droplets and jewelled body chains and vests decorate the torso.

The collection is communicated by an accompanying campaign fronted by a slew of influential talents, including Adwoa Aboah, Malick Bodi, Fadhi Mohamed, Tess McMillan, Penelope Tree and Maggie Cheng. Marking the release, 28 Instant Wonder pop-up stores are being announced across the globe, creating vivid spaces to house the jewels.
