Jonathan Anderson releases his first solo sneakers

A first for JW Anderson: the brand’s debut standalone sneaker. Having previously released successful collaborative footwear styles, now Jonathan Anderson has added an inaugural sneaker to his eponymous label’s storied repertoire.

Premiered in January 2021 during the menswear FW21 collection, the footwear style takes its cues from Anderson’s progressive approach to construction and silhouette: crafted in “exploded proportions” and cast in vibrant colour-block tones. While the shoe’s thick rubber platform sole nods to a classic stacked brogue from the JW Anderson archives.

“At JW Anderson we have always looked at this idea of deconstruction and blowing up proportions,” said Jonathan Anderson, founder and creative director of JW Anderson. “Through the development with our design team and at the factories that we work with we came up with a new shoe that’s a twist on the traditional. I like to think of it as an abstraction of a known sneaker but with disproportionate volumes.”

“I was thinking about a primitive form of craft where leather meets canvas,” Jonathan continued. “I like how the rough stitching implies the hand of the maker. I think that balances out the more technical side of trainer design. I like that these feel rough and rawer.”

The JW Anderson sneaker is now exclusively from JWAnderson.com, their Soho Flagship and HBX.
