For SS21 Louis Vuitton were among the few houses not to abandon the runway, opting to transport the collection to Shanghai in what was a remarkable feat in virtual coordination (neither Virgil Abloh nor any of his team traveled). Now, that collection is brought to life in London via a new Selfridges pop-up which, like the show itself, can be perused from the comfort of your own home.

Not that it matters, given that Selfridges remains firmly shut, but Louis Vuitton’s new pop-up is easily spotted from the ground floor courtesy of its hypnotising checkerboard displays, the very same featured by Virigil throughout his SS21 collection. Another source of continuity comes in the puppets and animal-like graphics, dubbed ‘Zoooom with friends’, that we first saw in Shanghai, clutched in the hands of models or pinned to lapels.

On the subject of tailoring – this collection is full of it, and the pop-up does a good job keeping up with Abloh’s vibrant colour theme. Importantly for him, the chosen pieces of tailoring are reflections of history, some of it very personal to his own. There are the slender suits and surreal accessories that draw parallels to London’s ska and two-tone scenes of the 60s, and the combinations of red, yellow and green that nod toward the flags of Ghana, Ethiopia and to Jamaican dress. Encompassing ready-to-wear, leather goods, shoes and accessories, there’s more than enough to keep you scrolling through your virtual appointment.
