See Tom Hanks as a news-reading cowboy in the trailer for Paul Greengrass’ new film

The last time Tom Hanks teamed up with Paul Greengrass, he delivered what remains arguably one of the finest performances of his career as Captain Phillips, the eponymous hero whose ship is overrun off the Horn of Africa by pirates.

For the pair’s latest joint project, News of the World, Hanks reprises his role as a captain, this time Captain Jefferson Kyle Kidd, a Civil War vet turned Western hermit, who travels between towns in Texas reading the news aloud to captivated audiences.

Based on the 2016 novel of the same name by Paulette Jiles, the story pivots on Kidd’s relationship with Joanna (Helena Zengel), a young orphan he finds abandoned on the road and takes into his custody. Joanna was kidnapped by Native Americans as a child and grew up between disparate customs, cultures and languages. Under the nurturing care of Kidd however, traversing the dusty roads of the Lone Star State, she discovers who she really is. Expect a road move like no other.

News of the World is scheduled for release in the US on 25 December and 1 January in the UK.
