Kim Jones and Shawn Stussy create Dior’s first-ever surfboard
Fashion | 29 June 2020

Last December marked a big moment for Kim Jones, coaxing his hero Shawn Stussy out of retirement to collaborate on the Dior Fall 2020 menswear show. Shown in Miami, the collection plucked influences from surf and skate culture for an acid-hued celebration. Now, the duo take the collection’s Miami surf theme to new levels with the introduction of Dior’s first-ever surfboard.

“Shawn stussy is one of my great heroes,” says Jones of working with the designer. “He started out as a surfer, making his own boards and painted his name on them. It was quite natural for me to ask him to work together on the very first Dior surfboard… it’s quite amazing!”

Stussy’s passion for surfing is as well-documented as his art and design work, and here he applies this knowledge with precision. Designing and shaping the board in a form known as ‘The Gun’ – cast in a streamlined, elongated shape in order to catch and ride he world’s biggest waves – it comes decorated with the hypnotic ‘Dior’ collage that featured heavily in the Fall 2020 show, while the board also sees Stussy work Dior’s heritage in tune with his own; reimagining the house’s bee motif and casting the board in signature colours, Dior gray and ice blue. Finished by UWL workshop in La Rochelle, France, the piece took 72 hours of minute craftmanship, creating precision at the highest level.
