The Olympic Games have a long and carefully-preserved history, but if Tokyo’s 2020 announcements are anything to go by, this year’s edition is set to be the most progressive yet. After decades of building momentum worldwide, this year’s Games will see skateboarding make its Olympic debut, following the decision to include the sport back in 2016. Now skateboarders will finally have their skills recognised officially – and thanks to Nike, they’ll be showing off in style.
Today, the brand unveiled a series of Olympic collections which showed real commitment to sustainability. Skaters representing Team USA, France and Brazil will take to the ramps in graphic kits made from 100 percent recycled polyester and featuring vivid styling in collaboration with Dutch artist Parra, created to celebrate each nation’s unique sport culture. Elsewhere medalists will take to their podiums in trainers made from recycled manufacturing material.

“We see sport’s greatest stage as our biggest opportunity to show the world what’s possible,” says Nike CEO John Donahoe. “After all, what’s at stake isn’t just records, but the future of sport itself.” It’s a bold statement, but one that checks out – with brands across the board forced to reconsider their approach in the midst of a climate crisis, it’s time to get creative.
Better still, not everything is reserved for the athletes. This spring will see the launch of Space Hippie, an “exploratory footwear collection” made from scrap material left on factory floors. It’s a welcome and inventive step forward, and one which proves that sustainability in sports has a positive future.
