In today’s relentlessly fast fashion industry, the appeal of durability has never been more evident. That’s where the trusty, timeless Birkenstock comes in. For more than two centuries, the German brand has specialised in comfortable but stylish sandals, amassing a cult fanbase in the process. The Personality campaign series, shot by Jack Davison, takes an intimate glimpse into the lives of these fans. But for SS20, one of these devotees also happens to be an extremely successful shoe designer in his own right: Manolo Blahnik.

Photographed alongside niece and company CEO Kristina, Blahnik chose the portrait location as his very first store on London’s Old Church Street. Although best-known for his slender heels and delicate detailing, Manolo styles his chunky, closed-toe Birkenstocks with a sharp red suit. Kristina takes a similarly minimalist approach, styling up a black pair she bought back in 2004 with a classic white shirt dress.

The simple yet effective images mark the latest in a campaign series whose past stars have included fashion powerhouse Grace Coddington, contemporary artist Zhou Li and actor Yoo Ah-In. Both Blahniks describe it as an “honour” and a “privilege” to be part of the SS20 campaign, which also features multidisciplinary artist Faye Toogood, known for her commitment to sustainability and her namesake brand, Toogood.

The same can be said of Birkenstock. After all, the key to protecting the planet is to buy less and wear more – and with its centuries-old reputation for longevity, it’s undeniable that a pair of trusty Birkenstocks are built to last.
