Out on the floor

Farah pays homage to northern soul’s weekend warriors
By Alex James Taylor | 19 July 2019

Let’s take things back to Lancashire in the 60s-70s, to clubs like Wigan Casino and Manchester’s Twisted Wheel, where disaffected Northern teenagers bobbed and spun themselves into nirvana to a soundtrack of often under-heralded American floor-fillers – typically from obscure soul labels such as Okeh, Tamla, and Chess.

Working hard in the week, these dance-enthusiasts truly lived for the weekend, gathering at clubs to dance until sunrise and strut their stuff – drops, splits and Bruce Lee kicks. As a cultural movement, northern soul defined a generation and influenced many.

Diving into the Northern Soul scene, British heritage brand Farah pays homage to the “obsession with authenticity and musical purity” of the subculture via its new FW19 collection. Inspired by aspects of the clubgoers’ style – think short back and sides, immaculate brogues Italian knits and Levi’s shrink-to-fit jeans – Farah translates the fashion of the time through its own classic design codes. Here, textured button-down polos feature alongside bold striped shirts in tumbled cord, brushed puppy and houndstooth, while – ideal for kicking out time – outerwear features a blackwatch wool biker and Farah’s version of the classic duffle, alongside a lightweight version.

Elsewhere, Farah’s hopsack trouser makes a bold encore, inspired by the brand’s original trouser which first came to prominence in the early 70s and available in either a slim chino version or tapered crop – we advise choosing according to your high-kick velocity.
