Gotta’ light?
In 1949, dunhill launched its Aquarium lighters. Each uniquely handmade and assembled, the lighters feature meticulous carvings and handpainted lucite panels that represent miniature aquariums containing freshwater fish. 70 years have since passed, but these accessories still hold ultimate value (quite literally, these vintage pieces can fetch a cool £10,000 at auction).
Marking this seven-decade milestone, Dunhill has reimagined those Aquarium fauna and flora illustrations as a limited-edition capsule collection. Here, exotic fish swim up louche, revere-collar shirts, birds fly across reversible bombers and tropical plants stretch across accessories. Elsewhere, the line-up also boasts nylon backpacks, belt bags, leather goods and slip-on sneakers.

“I always consider what can be revisited from the dunhill archive, to be re-contextualised, evolved and how we inform our audience,” says Mark Weston, creative director of dunhill. “With Aquarium, it’s all there; there’s a tension, something traditional and immediate but also kind of risqué and humorous too. To me that’s so British.”
And if you’re feeling flush, the Aquarium lighters will also be reissued using the original hand-carved and hand-painted techniques, and finished in palladium or 18-carat gold plating, naturally. While a limited-edition run of fifteen lighters will also be available, each engraved and numbered. Prices range from £175 – £8,900 – so be wary when lending out one of these on a night out.
The Aquarium capsule collection is available now in dunhill stores and online.
