Steven Meisel shoots Givenchy’s surreal and sensual SS19 campaign

For SS19, the codes between Clare Waight Keller’s Givenchy couple were blurred to cohesive proportions. In a collection titled, “I Am Your Mirror“, the British designer took inspiration from journalist, photographer and intrepid traveller Annemarie Schwarzenbach, who rejected the constraints of traditional gender norms throughout her life, and Lou Reed and Nico’s own gender-blurring relationship.

Now comes the collection’s campaign imagery, in which the Givenchy man and woman once again come together – only this time under the expert lens of renowned photographer Steven Meisel. Featuring models Veronika Kunz, Karolin Wolter, Henry Kitcher and Alpha Dia from the Givenchy family, the images appear like outtake-style clips, portraying a “series of irreverent and at times brazen images filmed during a studio sitting” – reads the press release.

Inspired by a nineties aesthetic and shot against a stark white backdrop, an accompanying short film adds a sense of tease to the campaign as a voiceover suggestively reads commands such as, “Let me spin you round and round”, as a model toys with a pair of silver balls, and “bon appétit” while another character eats a banana. It all adds to a sense of surreal humour that draws to mind the stylish wit of Jean-Luc Godard.
