A retrospective on the life and craft of Gianni Versace is set to open at the opulent Kronprinzenpalais. Launching next Tuesday, it will consist of a multitude of elements that enabled the artist to build and represent the Versace universe, all brought together by Gianni’s friends, family and boyfriend Antonio D’Amico, an Italian model and fashion designer.

The curators of the show have chosen to host it in Germany, the location of the very first Versace fashion show that was unveiled in 1978. In 1994, Gianni had his first exhibition in Berlin and was so fascinated with the city that he planned to come back. Three years later, on the height of his success, Gianni Versace was murdered at his home in Miami, Florida. The retrospective seeks to function as a fulfilment of his will.

Speaking about the project, the organisers stated that “2017 is the perfect year for commemorating an extraordinary man and his work in the most spectacular exhibition ever, brought to Berlin by private collectors from Italy and around the world, including many famous fashion-highlights and pieces worn by celebrities like Prince, Madonna, Elton John, George Michael or Anna Wintour and Claudia Schiffer.”

Spanning a vast number of personal belongings and interior objects, including fashion, accessories, furniture, home-deco, photographs even a reproduction of his lavish bedroom from the famous Miami Mansion, Villa Casa Casuarina, the exhibition is said to make it the largest public display of Gianni Versace‘s original craft ever seen. Set in the heart of Berlin-Mitte, it will be a hard one to miss if you’re visiting the German capital this spring.
