Last month, Off-White designer Virgil Abloh teamed up with US sportswear giants Nike to reconstruct ten of the brand’s footwear icons. This limited edition collection called The Ten reimagines designs of classics including Nike’s Vapormax, Airmax 90, 97, AF1, Chuck Taylor, Air Jordan 1, Blazer, Presto, Vaporfly and Hyperdunk. The redesigns are broken down into two themes; hand-cut, open-source and reconstructed ‘Revealing’ designs and ‘Ghosting’ silhouettes, consisting of translucent uppers to reveal the inner design workings.

To celebrate The Ten, Nike and Virgil held a series of workshops during London Fashion week, which were led by some of the most influential creatives in their field. “Nike Off Campus” was not only a celebration of the ten icons but also aimed to “create a space for the exchange of new ideas in sports and culture.”

One of their workshops “SKATABLE ARCHITECTURE” saw Nike SB riders demoing in their brand new sneakers. Here we introduce skaters Hjalte Harlber, Korhan Gyle and Hyun Kummer, who chat to us about their skating background and their Nike favourites.

You’re based in Copenhagen, what’s the skate scene like there?
The skate scene is good, very relaxed. People are a bit lazy and not so hyped on filming, but we have so many good spots and you never get kicked out. I love skating Copenhagen, but it’s hard to be productive there.

What do you get up to when you aren’t skating?
When I’m back home I try to rest and take care of my body. I’m a big sauna guy – I go to the sauna almost every day. Besides that, I just try to hang with all my old friends that aren’t skating anymore, cook good food and draw.

You’re mates with Alex Olson, right? How did you guys first meet?
We met in New York a few years back when I was working on my TransWorld interview with Mike O’meally, he introduced us.

What’s your favourite Nike classic from Virgil’s Ten collection?
It’s actually the Blazer we skated in. I really like the Air Jordan 1 as well…

How did you first get into skating?
I first got into skating when I was twelve. Me and my friends used to hang out in a school playground near my house once everyone had left, we’d play football and ride our bikes. One day my friend Freddy bought a skateboard to the school so we swapped bike for board and I was hooked. Cruising down this little tarmac slope was the funnest thing! One time I tried to push up the hill while kneeling on the board but my knee was on the nose. I leant too far forward and chipped my tooth out on the floor. That was my first skate injury, I was hyped!

How have you seen the UK skate scene change since you started?
When I started skating I remember being called a jitter quite a lot and being looked down on for skating, like I was a nuisance to society but now it seems like people admire that we are doing what we love to do and that we are being creative and expressive. We are more accepted in society these days.

Best spot to skate in Bristol?
Of course it’s Lloyds, I grew up there. The first day I got my skateboard on my twelfth birthday I went there in my black Air Max and started trying to drop off the first block. Lloyds is home. I need to go back there soon.

What’s the scene like in Bristol at the minute? Any new talents we should check out?
I’m actually living in London at the moment so I don’t see what’s going on too much in Bristol but I’m always keeping an eye on the scene through Instagram. Ollie Lock and Sam Nobbs are killing it at the moment. Keep an eye on those two.

Who was your skate idol growing up?
I had a few idols when I was young but P-Rod’s part in In Bloom inspired me so much when I was young because he was really young and absolutely killing it. I looked up to him for sure.

What’s your favourite Nike classic from Virgil’s Ten collection?
I think the Chuck Taylors are rad but I’ve just been skating the Blazer with green laces all day and I love them! Blazer wins!

Hyun Kummer

When did you first realise that skating could be something you could pursue as a career?
When companies such as Nike started reaching out to me.

When did you get your first board and what was it?
My first board was one of those 30cm skateboards for children, bought in 2007. The year after I convinced my parents to buy me an actual board as an Easter present.

You’ve recently been picked up by Supreme flow via your insta. How important has social media been for your career so far?
Without my social channels, I would have no “career”. More and more people started following my Instagram and I liked the way it was going, so I kept it going… and it’s still going.

What’s next for you? What are you currently working on/towards?
I just got out of school so having fun is the most important thing at the moment.

What’s your favourite Nike classic from Virgil’s Ten collection?
The Air Jordan 1.
