Nestled in the schedule, by invitation was Tom Ford’s presentation at his Victoria showroom, a stone’s throw from the Phillips de Pury auctioneers.
There’s a synergy in buying what he has hanging off his rails and what Phillips have hanging from their walls. No-one treats themselves spontaneously to Tom Ford by going into a store and browsing – you set aside an hour or two, go hard and drop 20 or 30 grand at a time. There’s a sense of permanence. But talk of money is vulgar, so you do it and don’t brag.
His menswear approach is very much wardrobe, not whim. The rails were a chromatic spectrum through ROY-G-BIV of silk robes, shirts of every permutation, tailoring, shoes and accessories. What Mr Ford was focusing on this season however, as he called models using a designer doorbell, was colour.
“I’m don’t want to say white is the new black… but it is,” he said dry-as-you-like. Pink’s flagged up too, through silhouettes that are a touch purer, more streamlined than before.
Other than the ornately embroidered velvet slippers, which he recommends you clash with your tailoring, there was the ultimate Tom Ford accessory: velvet sheathed ebonised crutches.
A preferred model had hurt his leg playing football, so rather than drop him from the line-up, Ford upgraded his recovery. Chic to the next level.
