A translation of the techniques and traditions of the Union des Artists Modernes (UAM), or the French modernist movement, Saint Laurent’s new store concept by Hedi Slimane arrives in London.

Whilst the vocabulary was previewed at Dover Street Market last year, we now have an entire three floor boutique to get lost in; reflections, lines and angles intersecting hedonistically into eternity.

Think “Black Silk” marble for dado rails, “Statuary white” marble for the floors and fitting rooms, nickel or gold-plated brass for Art Deco-inspired vitrines, and, in contrast to the polished textures, raw concrete formwork. Globally the concept includes period pieces specific to each store, including works by Jacques Adnet, René Herbst and Marcel Breuer.

After you’ve chip-and-pinned and are swinging your awesomely chic carrier through Knightsbridge, take a moment to think how the Saint Laurent packaging relates to the legendary Le Smoking in matt/gloss, Grain de Poudre and grosgrain. And when you open the box inside at home, realise the embossing echoes panelling from Mr Yves Saint Laurent’s rue de Babylone apartment.
