Born to Fail? Then look at this

Matthew Miller AW13 Film
Fashion | 26 September 2013

Matthew Miller‘s AW13 collection is a uniform built from factory floor to office, its roots in tailoring, suits, overcoats and raincoats reworked for today’s youth.

Taking from Generation X and giving to Generation Y, the slogan Born to Fail runs throughout as a two-fingered tribute to the discontent. Here we premiere the season’s accompanying film, as Miller rouses us with fighting-talk theory…

“The collection was based on a book that I was introduced to. The book, written by Peter Wedge and Hilary Prosser was a study and analysis of youth and his/her survival on the council estates of England. I found it incredibly profound that thirty years later nothing has dramatically changed, we are still at the same level, in terms of social mobility, education and opportunity. The collection is a two fingered salute to society and the failures of several Governments since the 1970s who have neglected the youth of Britain’s working class.

Failure has so many negative connotations, from the age of fourteen young men are told they are failures throughout the UK. Statistically these young men are more likely to commit suicide than any other in their age or gender range. The collection Generation Content / Content Generation is a celebration of failure! A celebration of youth. A celebration of no surrender!”
