On Monday afternoon, Aventura Mall, the Miami-based upscale shopping destination for international design and contemporary art, celebrated the launch of an original commission from the German-born and Stockholm-based artist Carsten Höller.

For the past decade, Höller’s name has become synonymous with large-scale artworks. For the Floridian location, the artist created a nine-story landmark – titled Aventura Slide Tower – that serves as his first permanent slide tower in the United States. For the Belgian-born artist, who originally trained as an agricultural scientist and is renowned for turning art galleries into playground, this latest project furthers his ongoing exploration of the nature of human relationships.
As the multi-media artist – whose list of collaborators includes Prada and Anish Kapoor noted with regard to the new slide tower, he created the particular structure to promote joy and a feeling “somewhere between delight and madness.”
Ninety-three feet in the air, the launch saw guests, including the artist’s long-time friends and collaborators such as Chloë Sevigny, Harmony Korine, Jackie Soffer, Craig Robins, and Simon Haas, sliding down the structure fifteen miles per hour. The interactive installation joins the line-up of artworks by Louise Bourgeois’s, The Haas Brothers, Jorge Pardo, Daniel Arsham, and Ugo Rondinone from the latest curatorial edit of Aventura.
