Desert beach

MSGM SS22 was a surreal heatstroke day at the beach

MSGM’s signature acid hues really pop against the dazzling Italian sun. On a desert beach, Massimo Giorgetti’s SS22 cast are statuesque, poised like guardians to the deep sea. Centred around “the moments of a long day on a desert beach,” a surreal mood surged through MSGM’s SS22 filmic presentation; as if we’d spent just a little too long in the sun.

Inspiration stemmed from the work of artist Stephen Milner, and in particular, his A Spiritual Good Time series, which appropriated imagery of 90s surf culture to create a dialogue between these communities and his own personal investigation of gay identity. The saturated tones and joyous camaraderie of this series filtered directly into the MSGM collection. Wetsuits informed technical sportswear materials lycra leggings as watercolour prints reflected the ripples of water  and a new tie-dye technique replicated the effect of garments faded under the heat of the sun. As if models had emerged from the sea, their hair dripped and clothes stuck to their bodies. Sharks became laser-printed imagery alongside paisley rhythms and tribal motifs, while crab shells studded with piercings clung to distressed knitwear. With MSGM the party is never too far away, and here, a full moon rave was hinted via bandana print motifs, bucket hats and saturated psychedelic tones. Why would you ever leave?
